Secret Security Clearance and Financial Problems?
I am trying to get Secret clearance. I recently had my car repossessed but it is not reported as of yet. I think I have 5 days to get it out of repossession. My total debts is less than $10,000; not including the car debt (which reads in good standing now until 30 days are up then it will report on my credit as repo.) and school loans (in good standing). The secret clearance is with the Department of Navy which is less strict about financial obs. than Department of Treasury and Department of Homeland Security. I want to know if I will be able to obtain Secret clearance? I have had several public trust investigations. I have also had a MBI done which returned favorable as long as I kept my debts paid at the time. I lost that job with MBI clearance and have not maintain keeping my bills paid. I have tried to but it has been difficult to find a job and keep it. Now that I am working with a contractor supporting the Navy department…I plan to get back on my feet and take care of these debts by either debt consolidation like I have done before or file for bankruptcy. Can someone tell me if I tell them the truth about my situation and show that I am trying to resolve these issue that I will get the secret clearance?
P.S. I do not have any court dates. I have never done drugs or alcohol. I do not know any foreignors.
Will I atleast get EOD / Interim clearance and how long will that take?

OMG…I HAD THE VERY SAME PROBLEM…but my debt was 7,500…i settled it 2 months ago for 2,800.
you will NOT get the SC until at least 8 months of paying those debts or making monthly payments on time (except the student loans, you can still have the stud. loans but be sure to pay on time). Be sure to save all copies of receipts, settlements etc with the companies you owe money, just in case they do not report your payments to the credit report.
as for the other debts, be sure you are paying on time. they will not disqualify you for having debts, but will disqualify you for not paying on time. try to reach a deal with the company that has your car, try to make a monthly payment plan…then show the paperwork to the investigator, that will show him/her that you intend to pay your debt.
reasons for disqualification:
1-Not being financially responsible
OR
2-Not living within your means= you spend too much for your salary.
by the way…if you file for bankruptcy it will prevent you from obtaining a SC for at least 3 years. reason? because for them is too soon to decide to trust you financially. you have to show them that you can be without financial problems for a long time, that your financial problems are not frequent and that you will not engage in the same behavior over and over again.
Look at this webpage:

those are cases of SC clearances that were denied in 2009, that will give you a view of your situation.
You sound like a nice target for a spy to recruit against us with your irresponsibility regarding your financial problems.
I don’t trust you enough to give you a “FOUO” (Fo Official Use Only) clearance.
Listen to Penny!
I believe the repo may be a problem, but if everything else is in good standing you should be good to go. With the repo you may only get a secret clearance and not a top secret clearance.
BTW, don’t listen to Penny!
